The Challenge
Before partnering with ZC Productions, UTK faced a challenge in effectively showcasing the value and experience of its Honors programs to prospective students and their families. While the programs themselves were highly competitive and nationally ranked, UTK lacked engaging video content that could truly capture the attention of today’s younger, digital-first audience. Traditional overview videos were no longer sufficient to communicate the lifestyle, culture, and benefits of the Honors experience. UTK needed a more compelling and emotionally engaging way to increase awareness, inspire applications, and ultimately drive enrollment into its Honors programs.
Our Strategy & Services
To address these challenges, ZC Productions developed a comprehensive video storytelling strategy focused on capturing the real, lived experience of Honors students at UTK. Rather than creating a generic overview video, we leaned into cinematic storytelling and authentic voices to build a deeper emotional connection with viewers. Our approach combined high-end video production, strategic messaging, and narrative-driven content to highlight the prestige, community, and transformative impact of UTK’s Honors programs.
What We Did (Execution)
Our team began with a strategic discovery process to identify the key stories and perspectives that would resonate most with prospective students and their parents. We conducted over 25 interviews, featuring current Honors students, alumni, faculty, staff, and Jim Haslam, founder of the Haslam Leadership Scholars (HALS) program. These interviews formed the emotional backbone of the project, providing authentic insight into the Honors experience.
Over the course of four full production days, we captured extensive B-roll footage across UTK’s campus, including Honors classes, events, and living and learning communities. Filming took place during a tight window in the spring semester of May 2025, requiring efficient planning and execution to complete production before the academic year ended.
From this content, we developed a suite of three high-impact videos: a comprehensive Honors overview video showcasing the full experience, a dedicated video highlighting the Chancellor’s Honors Program (CHP), and a focused video on the Haslam Leadership Scholars (HALS) program. Each piece was carefully edited to balance storytelling, energy, and clarity, ensuring the content was both engaging and informative for modern audiences.
The Results
As a result of this integrated video strategy, UTK now has a compelling set of visual assets that effectively communicate the value and prestige of its Honors programs. The videos provide prospective students and their families with a clear, engaging look into what it’s like to be part of the Honors community—something that was previously missing from their marketing efforts. By elevating the quality and storytelling of their content, UTK strengthened its ability to capture attention, build emotional connection, and position its Honors programs as both prestigious and highly desirable. These videos now serve as a cornerstone of UTK’s Honors recruitment efforts and live on their website as a key conversion tool.
